Larry Sager Larry Sager’s new work, No Guns, No Knives, No Personal Checks, chronicles his adventures driving the night shift for Yellow Cab through San Francisco’s hustling and harrowing haunts. An engaging parade of passengers inspire the cabby’s tales that are poignant, humorous, often ominous, yet always evoke the unique qualities of The City. During the daylight of those mid-90s, Sager returned to his mundane pursuit of a B. A. in Creative Writing from San Francisco State, but only after having penned the fresh experiences of the previous night. That nocturnal ritual provides immediacy and gripping detail to the book. One selection “The Highest Bidder” has already been published in the Seattle literary publication Lit Rag. While earning his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, Sager’s other published work appeared as articles in books and journals. Additionally, for two years as Senior Contributing Editor of the Res Gestae newspaper, he wrote regularly featured columns reporting on newsworthy, current and legal events encompassing diverse subjects from California earthquakes, lawyers, and rooming with his friend’s pet pigs. Sager is a classically trained musician, and has performed professionally in most every musical style, venue and genre from jazz to rock. Larry’s varied history includes renovating San Franciscan Victorian houses, managing a small construction company, working as a radio talk show host & DJ, and writing and producing several short amateur films. While obtaining his J.D. at the University of Michigan Law School, he worked at the White House Counsel’s Office under President Clinton, San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He currently practices law with a prominent San Francisco law firm, teaches Criminal Law at the University of California, and resides in Oakland with his wife, Maria. About the Illustrators Shanon Essex put his hand to the book’s front cover, along with ten pen-and-ink illustrations including an obligatory map of San Francisco. His childhood passion for cartooning manifests weekly in the editorial section of The Alameda Sun Newspaper. After acquiring his BFA in Fine Art from San Francisco's Academy of Art, Shanon’s modern realist oil paintings have entered numerous private and corporate collections, as he continues to create other fine art and commercial design. It is very likely that artist and author met years ago during an exchange of words and gestures as they combated downtown San Francisco traffic: Sager driving his cab while making storyline notes, Essex as a bike messenger pedaling his way through art school. Emil, an artist and amateur filmmaker, has produced four animated short films (receiving one Crowbar Award from the Singapore Animation Film Festival) as he pursues his BA in 3D Character Animation at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He has been “illustrating” since first introduced to a pencil and paper. He has an obsession with exotic coffee drinks, and his web site may be viewed at: www.media-pirated.deviantart.com. | |
